The Myth of Going for No

“People are hungry for the solution you have to offer.”

Brooke Elder

Why do people tell you to go for no if that’s not what you’re supposed to be doing? Well, it could be for lots of reasons. Yes, going for no can be a way to motivate since it creates a positive spin on a negative outcome. Yet,  more often than not, it takes way more negatives to get a positive, and in the process, it doesn’t feel very good inside. That’s why taking a yes approach is far more effective.

Let’s face it; there’s no real way to safeguard yourself from hearing no. You’re going to hear it all the time, but there are ways to hear no less...and that’s what we want to work on.

“We don’t want to be getting 99 no’s for one, yes. Why not get eight no’s for every one, yes. Those are way better odds to be playing.”

 - Brooke Elder

Why are you getting so many no’s? The answer...you’re talking to everyone, instead of identifying the people you should be talking to. You’re more likely to be successful when you can pinpoint the people you should be talking to instead, the right people.

Focusing on one solution may be hard to narrow down at first, but try thinking about what you love and why it helps others. Generally, it is one thing you could do all day long. Now, let that be your anchor.

Once you identify that one problem you have the solution for, then start talking about it all the time!

“With you and your business, you can’t solve everyone’s problems.” So focus on the one problem you can solve.”

-Brooke Elder

You can help clients bring the problem to the surface by considering these things:

  • What issues are they dealing with?
  • How are they struggling?
  • What are the problems they are blind to?

These points will allow you to position yourself as the answer to their problem. Then, you’ll start hearing yes because you’re talking to the right people with the right question.
